New Starter Profile – Hilda Ng
We are excited to have a new Project Coordinator, Hilda Ng, start with us this month! Hilda will work across ICP and the Curtin Commercialisation team to connect ICP’s resources to the start-up community as well as connecting ICP members to the innovative ideas that come from the Commercialisation programs.
Meet Hilda
Hello! I am Hilda Ng.
I recently joined ICP as a Project Coordinator. Prior to this, I worked in the education sector both overseas and in Australia.
Before joining the education sector, I worked as a software engineer for a healthcare software company in Malaysia. Both my mom and sister are teachers, perhaps this is the reason why I decided to change my career to be an academic for a couple of years. I love working in the University campus environment and always found working in higher education very rewarding. I have worked in Curtin on various projects throughout my roles as a Business Analyst, eLearning Specialist, and Simulation Technician.
During my free time, I love cooking and trying different recipes!

ICP Intern Spotlight
Yatin Patel is one of ICP’s talented interns who worked on a project over the summer for TADWA (Technology for Ageing & Disability) helping to commercialise a powerful new voice controller which improves the lives of older Australians and those with disabilities.
Yatin is from the School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering and is completing a degree in Mechatronic Engineering.
In line with his skillset, Yatin worked on the prototyping phase of the TADWA project, investigating the feasibility of taking the speech recognition offline.
Yatin successfully designed and implemented an emergency offline voice controlled stopping system using a newly developed speech recognition library. Yatin’s work will serve as the testing ground for new technology, laying the foundations for future research and development in this area for TADWA.
We are so pleased that Yatin has landed a new position as a Graduate Electrical and Instrumentations Engineer at Momentum Engineering.
It has been a pleasure having Yatin as part of our Talent Pool and we wish him all the best in his new role!

ACTIVITIES
WiTWA Techtrails Future Jobs & Skills
Women in Technology WA (WiTWA) are hosting a workshop series to discuss the vital topic of the future of STEM jobs and skills and how to address the gaps in student career guidance for young women. ICP is proudly supporting WiTWA as a Venue Partner for these educational workshops.
This month’s workshop brought together industry and academia to collaborate, identify, and understand what priorities exist for the future of STEM careers. Workshop participants were encouraged to consider STEM skills gaps, industry priorities and how we can share a unified, positive STEM message, ultimately encouraging young women to consider a STEM career, and to understand the importance of STEM skills in all areas of life.
ICP is proud to support WiTWA as the champion for diversity and equity for women in technology within WA. We wait can’t for the next workshop and are eager to see the outcomes brought to light from these important sessions.

EVENTS RECAP
Digital Transformation in Mining
Thank you to our fantastic speakers, panellists and attendees who joined us in Kalgoorlie on Friday for our event exploring Digital Transformation in Mining.
Facilitated by Sabina Shugg AM, Curtin’s Kalgoorlie campus Director, the event brought together Curtin University academia and Kalgoorlie’s local mining industry. Our brilliant panellists, Shane Barker, Cailli Knievel and Shane Downsborough, expertly unpacked some of the challenges faced by leading mining operators and METS companies in the Goldfields.
Some of the key themes included:
- The security & accessibility of data within organisations
- The ability to convert data to knowledge
- Lack of awareness of the existing support services and innovation centres
Some key topics of interests included:
- Increasing the uptake new technology, tools, and platforms
- Ensuring our graduates are learning the fundamentals as well as undertaking practical projects
A big thanks to our speakers, Andrew Bell, Rob Solomon and Digby Emmett for exploring the benefits of cross-discipline collaboration and showcasing how industry can leverage ICP, WA School of Mines: Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering and METS Ignited Australia Ltd to support digital transformation in the Goldfields.

Unlocking the Value of Data Science
Data Science Week 2022 (DSW2022) brought together the data science community to network and explore the impact of the field.
Our event investigated how data science can help streamline business processes. Facilitated by our Director, Andrew Bell, the session showcased our close connection to the Curtin Institute for Computation (CIC) and deep dived into some past data science-driven projects.
We heard from the CIC’s Lead Data Scientist, Daniel Marrable, who showcased the diverse expertise of the many specialists within his team. Dan also illustrated how the CIC supports ICP with the following:
- Scoping data science projects
- Technical proposal writing
- Mentoring students & interns
- Providing data science expertise across a range of domains
- Solving industry problems with data science
Also, a big thank you to our student associates, Jeevanpreet Singh, Eric Kian Lik Lau and Joseph Tabadero for presenting your intern projects and demonstrating how #datascience can optimise and automate day-to-day processes.
