At Cisco Innovation Central Melbourne and La Trobe University’s Digital Innovation Hub, we host the research group of the State-wide Virtual Emergency Department, located at Northern Health – a Cerner customer and a major health system in the north of Melbourne, VIC, Australia. Our work focuses on improving the patient-clinician-doctor experience with devices, systems, and processes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our prototypes involve enhancing Telehealth using augmented reality and smart glasses, as well as various aspects of health information management. The Director of the VIC Virtual ED (VVED) has requested our help in integrating technologies to better manage ED information (they are also using Cerner). We have a Chair of Digital Health, Prof. James Boyd, who has the capability to generate synthetic patient data for research purposes, building process innovation prototypes, and most importantly, for teaching and learning the use of health devices, process platforms, and systems.<\/span><\/p>\n

The benefits of AR technology for aged care could be profound. Many regional nursing homes struggle to secure enough in-person visits from doctors. Without AR, doctors can examine patients remotely, but this often requires two staff members: a nurse speaking with the resident while a second staff member films with an iPad or a phone. In many aged care homes, freeing up a second staff member is a challenge. AR technology aims to improve care for patients in remote and rural settings where staffing deficits are a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n
